Concentration Tracker - Chrome Extension

1. Introduction

The Concentration Tracker is a Chrome extension developed as part of a research project. This privacy policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding your data.

2. Data We Collect

Our extension collects the following anonymous timing data when you use it:

• Session Duration: How long you run the focus timer
• Timestamps: When you start and stop focus sessions (date and time)
• User Predictions: Your estimate of how long you think you can stay focused
• Self-Reported Data: Your estimate of when you actually lost focus
• Session Count: Number of focus sessions per day

3. What We DO NOT Collect

We do NOT collect any personally identifiable information, including:

• ❌ Your name, email address, or any personal identifiers
• ❌ Your browsing history or websites you visit
• ❌ The content of your work or what you're focusing on
• ❌ Your location data
• ❌ Any information from other applications or tabs
• ❌ Your device information or IP address

4. How We Collect Data

Data collection is entirely under your control. The extension only sends data when you explicitly click the "Send Data" button. You can use the extension to track your focus sessions without ever sending any data.

5. How We Use Your Data

The anonymous data we collect is used solely for:

• Research Purposes: Understanding attention patterns and focus duration in the modern digital environment
• Community Science: Contributing to the TED concentration experiment
• Digital Wellness Research: Helping develop insights about productivity and attention management

We will never sell, rent, or share your data with third parties for commercial purposes.

6. Data Storage and Transmission

When you click "Send Data," the anonymous timing information is transmitted securely to a Google Sheets database via Google Apps Script. This data is:

• Stored in a secure Google Sheets spreadsheet
• Accessible only to the research team at TEDx
• Used in aggregate form for analysis
• Not linked to any personal identifiers

7. Data Retention

Anonymous session data is retained for the duration of the research project. The data may be used in aggregated, anonymized form for research publications and presentations. Individual session data cannot be traced back to any specific user.

8. Your Rights and Control

You have complete control over your data:

• Opt-In Only: Data is only sent when you click "Send Data"
• Use Without Sharing: You can use all features of the extension without ever sending data
• Uninstall Anytime: You can remove the extension at any time, and no further data will be collected

9. Local Storage

The extension stores session data locally on your device using Chrome's storage API. This data remains on your device and is only transmitted when you explicitly choose to send it. Local storage is cleared when you uninstall the extension.

10. Security

We take reasonable measures to protect the data we collect:

• Data transmission uses secure HTTPS connections
• Access to the Google Sheets database is restricted to authorized research team members
• No personal identifiers are collected, reducing privacy risks

11. Children's Privacy

This extension is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13.

12. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected in the "Last Updated" date at the top of this policy. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
